MICE FED ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS PASSED ON CHANGED METABOLISM FOR 2 GENERATIONS
DID YOUR GRANDPARENTS CHANGE YOUR GUT BIOME FROM THEIR DIET COKE ADDICTION?
That’s kind of terrifying. The study that made this disturbing discovery used mice, and I’m a little surprised it took scientists this long to look at this question. Mice were fed artificial sweeteners and the researchers found that not only did that change their glucose tolerance levels, it also changed their gut biome composition. That’s a little concerning all on its own. But they also found that it changed the metabolism of their kids, and then their grandkids as well. And here’s the thing: the mice kids and grandkids never ate artificial sweeteners. But their metabolism was affected as if they had.

IT’S NOT PROVEN TO BE TRUE FOR HUMANS, YET, BUT THERE’S ALREADY PRECEDENT
So what were these artificial sweeteners that changed the metabolism of mice for 2 generations? Acesulfame potassium and saccharin, which are the most common artificial sweeteners you can find in diet sodas, those little packets at the cafe, as well as processed foods. And when mice ate them, it changed the genetic expression for how their metabolisms work for 2 generations. Well, 2 generations, at least. And while this hasn’t been a proven affect for humans, yet, we already know that famine and chemical pollutants do affects humans in this way. So if you needed yet another reason to kick your Diet Coke habit, here it is.
