As if North Carolina politics couldn’t get any weirder.
Steven Wiles, 34, a Republican state Senate candidate in North Carolina and staunch defender of the state’s constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, was recently outed.
Turns out our Stevie, in his twenties, was a mainstay at the now-shuttered Club Odyssey in Winston-Salem from 2002-2010. According to the club’s owner, Randy Duggins, Wiles routinely performed as Miss Mona Sinclair, pictured above, in a bit that I’m assuming involved a lot of Delta Burke parodies.
Wiles spent most of the weekend denying the story. Then, when the above picture surfaced, he spent the rest of the weekend trying to explain it away. He told Business Insider that, “I think that everyone has their own choices to make and I’m fine with everyone making their own. For me, from a religious standpoint, just for my life, for me, it just was not something that I wanted to continue.” Wiles added that, “of course it was an embarrassment, but you know, you move on. You live life, and you change, and you make yourself what you want yourself to be. And that’s where I am now.”
Also, contributing to his retirement, he was dismissed from the Miss Gay America Pageant for “conduct unbecoming to a Promoter of the Miss Gay America pageant system.” I’ve been around enough drag queens to know that can mean a whole host of nasty things. Let your imaginations run wild.
According to a post on his Facebook page, when Wiles is not posing for pictures with the fervently homophobic Congresswoman Virginia Foxx, he’s a real estate agent. Also, he was none too pleased with the publicity:
Well, Wiles may have given up the drag queen life, but the drama is still there.
