HOLY CRAP, BATMAN! 40% OF AMERICANS BELIEVE GOD CREATED MAN 10,000 YEARS AGO!
So polls are very interesting tools. They can tell us all sorts of interesting information. But sometimes polls aren’t structured very well. I’m not sure if that applies in this case. So what’s up? Well, it’s not a Hallelujah moment, that’s for sure. Gallup recently conducted a poll that is a bit staggering. One of the things it found is that 40% of American adults believe in Creationism. So that means they believe God created human beings about 10,000 years ago. Say what? How can that be? Well, just consider the last few years politically to answer that question.

But this is still hard to take. Darwin’s On the Origins of Species came out in 1859. So that means we’ve been studying the reality of evolution for 160 years. So think about that for a moment. We know about the reality of carbon dating and fossils. We know about genes and the reality of genetics. But we’ve even started tracking how genes have changed over millennia. In other words, we have begun piecing together the reality of humans and all animals for thousands and millions of years. But 40% of American adults believe in Creationism? Eek!

So here are more of the numbers from this Gallup poll. 33% do actually believe in evolution, while God still guided our development. But Creationist belief is up 2% from 2017, and down 6% from 2012. So what about folks who believe God played no active role at all? That’s at its highest number ever: 22%. Gallup has conducted this poll for 37 years. So it’s worth noting that in 1982, only 9% of Americans believed God had no role. So what do I think? I think you can be spiritual and still believe in science. But it is astonishing to me that 40% of my blue blood peers are bible thumpers when it comes to human origins.
