New South Wales Air Drops Carrots and Sweet Potatoes to Starving Animals

NEW SOUT WALES AIR DROPS CARROTS AND SWEET POTATOES TO PREVENT ANIMAL ARMAGEDDON

So this is not something I expected to hear.  But it didn’t take me too long to decide it makes perfect sense.  By now, you’ve likely heard of the raging wild fires across much of Australia.  One mega fire alone likely killed over one billion animals.  Yes, 1,000,000,000 animals dead in one fire.  But it’s not just the animals that die in these fires that are cause for concern.  These unprecedented bush fires also devour all the food for the animals that survive.  So the government in New South Wales decided to take action to save the endangered Brush-tailed Rock-wallabies.  Why?  Because the poor things are starving.  And the world could lose them forever.  So how are they saving them?  Oh, just by doing air drops of carrots and sweet potatoes, of course.

CARROTS AND SWEET POTATOES WILL SAVE ENDANGERED WALLABIES FROM DEADLY DROUGHT/FIRE COMBO

But it is the kind of thing you would never think to hear about.  The NSW Government issues a statement, explaining, “Initial fire assessments indicate the habitat of several important Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby populations was burnt in the recent bushfires. The wallabies typically survive the fire itself, but are then left stranded with limited natural food as the fire takes out the vegetation around their rocky habitat. The wallabies were already under stress from the ongoing drought, making survival challenging for the wallabies without assistance.”  Wow.  I, for one, find that to be simply amazing.  Carrots and sweet potatoes!

THESE AIR DROPS BY FAR THE LARGEST EVER TO SAVE CUTE, ENDANGERED CRITTERS

So in the past week alone, they have done air drops of nearly 1,000 kilos of sweet potatoes and carrots.  They’ve aimed the drops at 6 critter colonies in the Wolgan and Capertee valleys.  But that’s not all.  Another thousand kilos dropped on 5 locations in the Yengo National Park.  The same portion, along with water, dropped on the Kangaroo Valley.  But yes, there were more carrot and sweet potato air drops on the Jenolan, Oxley Wild Rivers and Curracubundi national park lands.  So cross your fingers!  Let’s hope these air drops help prevent even more tragedy in the coming days and weeks.
