ADAM SILVER DESCRIBING NBA OFFICIATING AS “INCREDIBLE” IS A REMARKABLE SELL
I’m old enough that I remember the old TV show, That’s Incredible. At the time, it was good fun, with the occasional wow factor which fit the title of the show. But back then, the word “incredible” wasn’t bandied about anywhere near as much as today. Like many words, it gets used so much as a superlative filler that it has almost lost all meaning. Unfortunately, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has tossed the word out in poor use, taste and is literal BS. He gave an interview on the Pat McAfee Show where he talked about a few things NBA related. Unfortunately for Silver, and even more so for NBA fans, he also briefly talked about the officiating in the current NBA Playoffs, describing it (the officiating!) as incredible.

ADAM SILVER ISN’T STUPID, WHICH MEANS HE KNOWS THE NBA HAS A CREDIBILITY PROBLEM WITH OFFICIATING
I could easily choose some other adjectives. Like, real easily. But they’re not very positive or friendly. So I’ll hold those in abeyance, for now. Anyway, Adam Silver is a pretty smart fellow. He wouldn’t have made it to his position if he wasn’t, and would have made a major gaffe early on if he wasn’t. So the fact that he’s hawking click-bait IQ level soundbite BS describing the far too odious (ok, one adjective for now) as incredible is troubling. For one, “incredible” means “impossible or very difficult to believe.” And while Silver is smart, I doubt very much he intended the actual, literal definition of the word.

SO WHO IS INCREDIBLY HAPPY? VEGAS? THUNDER FANS? EQUITY FIRMS WHO OWN TEAMS?
Because yes, the 2026 NBA Playoffs officiating has been incredible in the sense that it’s been impossible to watch, and very difficult to believe just how bad it’s been. Flopping has become de rigueur for more players not named James Harden. Even worse, it seems to be something the defending NBA Champion Oklahoma City Thunder team is actually practicing. As a team. And the “incredible” officiating has been rewarding them for it. But not, apparently, rewarding the other NBA teams in the playoffs. And aside from most Thunder fans, it’s pissing everyone else off. It would be one thing to turn the NBA product into a flopping league that would make basketball rubes happy, and another to make everyone question if the competition wasn’t fixed.
But the incredible thing is, a lot of people are now talking even more about how the winner is fixed in the NBA. And Adam Silver not only didn’t put out that fire, he just threw kerosene on it. It really, really didn’t help that the NBA Store marketed NBA finals gear for the Knicks and Thunder while the Thunder were still tied with the Spurs at 2-2.
Incredible. Just, incredible.
