ACAPULCO BEACH SEES GLOWING BIOLUMINESCENT WATERS FOR FIRST TIME IN 6 DECADES
So I’m jonesing something fierce for some nice beach time. Like everyone else, I’m in Coronavirus lockdown. So no, I don’t live in Georgia. But seeing these pictures just makes me hope all the more that we can go to the beach, pretty much anywhere. But right now, Acapulco looks pretty damn perfect to me. And right now, I just wish I had been there to see this! For the first time in 60 years, bioluminescent plankton made the waters light up at the Puerto Marqués beach in Acapulco, Mexico, just a few days ago.

So literally, the waters glowed as the rolled to the shore in gentle waves. At least one person violated the no-swimming lockdown rules out of excitement. I can’t say that I blame him. So what causes this? We call them Noctiluca scintillans. You may have heard of them as the sea sparkle. When they feel disturbed, they light up in an amazing glow. But why haven’t we seen this in Acapulco, Mexico for 60 years? Well, because you need a LOT of them together to get what you see in the picture above. So yes, this is indeed a plankton bloom of these special critters.

Some people have already suggested that this happened again, finally, because of the sudden drop in human activity in Acapulco waters. But scientists are pretty clear that has nothing at all to do with it. Mostly, the sea sparkle needs the right amount of sunlight to charge up along with all the right nutrients to glow for all to see. Normally, if you saw them in the daytime they look like a rusty-brown color. So not too appealing. So when they get their glow on at night, it is a spectacular sight to behold. But if you’re into seeing this in person, make a trip to Puerto Rico or the Maldives, where this happens more often.
But I’m still down for a trip to Acapulco. Especially now.
