RUSSIAN PROPAGANDA CONVINCED PEOPLE THAT THE FRENCH WERE STEALING PENISES
Rumors can be pretty damaging, and no one is immune. If you can remember being in school before college, you know what I’m talking about. And if you’re younger, you’re likely addicted to social media in some form, which means you know all about ridiculous rumors making the rounds and everyone getting excited about it. You know, like it’s real. But with international politics these days, rumor as propaganda works in just the same way; the ridiculous becomes real, and ridiculously dangerous. And that’s playing out in Mali, where the African nation is losing its mind over a Russian rumor that France is engaged in stealing penises.

ONE HUMANITARIAN WORKER NEEDED TO BE EVACUATED OVER ACCUSATIONS OF STEALING PENISES
Just take that in, as it were. Yes, it’s ridiculous and shouldn’t be possible that anyone could believe that if you shake someone’s hand, your personal male junk would disappear. But you might also remember when there was a rumor in Africa that sleeping with a virgin would cure your AIDS infection. And yes, that was as disastrous as you might assume. But this Russian propaganda took root to such a degree that a humanitarian worker needed to be evacuated by the police after 3 men accused him of shaking their hands and…. stealing their penises. The government was even forced to publicly declare that there were no confirmed cases of penises being stolen!

So why would Russia do this? The answer is simple: influence. Russia wants to supplant France’s influence in the country and the region, and getting people scared with the fear that French intelligence agents were stealing penises with a simple handshake was an easy way to go. People in Mali even believed that Emmanuel Macron gave the order for a secret program called “Repopulation” himself, and that the stolen penises were ending up in a “secret bunker in Versailles.” After some effort, reality set in and people debunked the rumor. But not before a whole lot of people associated the French with a lot of penises being stolen.
And before Americans get all superior about this story, they might want to think about how many bullshit stories they thought were real in just the last 6 months….
