7-YEAR-OLD BOY COMPLAINING OF PAIN HAD 526 EXTRA TEETH IN HIS MOUTH
So there is this 7-year-old boy in New Delhi, India, who had a very unusual problem. He had some jaw pain, which isn’t too weird. He had some swelling along with the pain, located near his molars along his lower, right jaw. Ok, so maybe he is a little young to be dealing with wisdom teeth. So what could it be? Well, not what you’d expect, except for the title above. But when the boy went to the hospital for treatment and help, no one expected what they found. The boy had 526 teeth in his mouth. That’s right, 526.
DOCTORS STUNNED TO DISCOVER SAC IN BOY’S JAW FILLED WITH 526 TEETH
The hospital the boy went to is in the southern city of Chennai. But it wasn’t until doctors took x-rays and other scans of his mouth that they discovered the astounding cause of his pain. The head of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Saveetha Dental College and Hospital, Dr. Prathiba Ramani, said they discovered a sac in his normal jaw filled with “abnormal teeth.” Wow. That would indeed cause a body some pain. Two surgeons worked to remove the sac from the boy’s mouth. But afterwards, it took them 5 hours to confirm the contents. That’s how they discovered all the teeth and counted them.
BOY SENT HOME 3 DAYS AFTER SURGERY, WILL RECOVER COMPLETELY
So as you can imagine these teeth weren’t that large. The 526 measured .004 inches to .6 inches. Well, maybe that’s kind of large. Even the smallest of them were complete with crowns, roots and an enamel coat. Doctors released the boy three days later and will recover completely. So what happened here? It’s a very, very rare condition we know as composite odontoma. We don’t know the cause, be it genetic or something in the environment such as radiation. The boy had swelling in his jaw since he was 3. But he couldn’t sit still enough to be examined.
So here’s some truth: if you have mouth pain, don’t wait long to see your dentist.
