LARGEST SACRIFICIAL BURIAL GROUND EVER IN PERU, 140 KIDS, HEARTS REMOVED

So 6 years ago, residents living near the Huanchaquito-Las Llamas site in Peru saw human bones eroding out of the roadside.  That’s how this astonishing discovery began to unfold.  But now, we know this was a sacrificial site where 140 kids, 3 adults and 200 animals died and were buried in a ritual ceremony in the 15th Century.  The animals were either llamas or alpacas.  But scientists only recently released pictures of the now 8-year excavation.  They show the bodies of girls and boys aged 5-14 years. They’re all huddled together in burial pits.  Pretty much astonishing, right?  The ritualists killed all the kids by cutting open their chests.  Many of the children had their hearts removed.

KID’S SACRIFICE WAS A RESPONSE TO DEVASTATING CLIMACTIC EVENT

So far, evidence at the site seems to indicate that this sacrifice was because of a “climactic event.”  Evidently it was large enough that it upset the economic, political and ideological stability of one of the most powerful states in the New World.”  But back when locals first noticed the bones, authorities ordered an emergency excavation.  Scientists then discovered all of these bodies in a large number of digs around the 700-square-meter site.  But the original total of the dead could be much, much higher.  Scientists have also discovered “incomplete remains” in nearby areas where people live today.

THIS SITE IS BY FAR THE LARGEST MASS SACRIFICE GRAVE OF KIDS EVER FOUND

But in the ceremony, the ritualists wrapped the kids in cotton.  They painted some of their faces red. Some still had wrapped cloth in their graves.  The ritualists buried them facing the sea, which lies 350 meters away.  The 200 animals faced the mountains in their graves.  But this discovery is now the largest of its kind to date.  The previous record for a mass grave of 42 children was at the Mexica Templo Mayor in central Mexico.  So seeing how we  are facing climate change today, aren’t you glad no one does this anymore? So just imagine what could have happened today!

But there will be more news from this site. I expect far more details to come out.
